NC lawmakers- need to recognize that the changes in education have taken place in stages.(We know there is pressure to guarantee that students are being provided a quality education and that school funding is being used wisely.)Initially, school systems had to invent something to get started. Now, they can reflect a bit and see what has worked better. Of course, there is no substitute for children with special needs, or even, in my opinion for young learners who benefit from working directly with a teacher…and with other students…at least some of the time.
Is it realistic to completely reinvent school
…with those guarantees expected in the bill….and do it in 2 months? Maybe. But not without dedicated time to build this airplane while flying it. There are some great innovators out there. But I feel for those who must convince a lot of people that “this” whatever this is…is the answer and the right way to go. Must have input from teachers. Must provide assistance to any teachers less competent with skills they didn’t have to employ so consistently two months ago. Must consider research on best practices in this new system. A bigggg order. Build on what is known and have faith. But the guarantees? A moveable target. I work as a teacher assistant in a special education classroom—our students struggle getting new concepts in PERSON much less on a device. One student has come so far with communicating with us and now since virtual learning has begun he barely talks to us. One student has a device from the school but no internet (they won’t bring it out to where he lives unless they pay for that and they absolutely can’t afford that). One student has selective mutism and anxiety so he has yet to join a zoom lesson. It’s SO HARD!!! I think these politicians need to be held to a higher standard for standing true to their promises—I believe they would fail miserably! Yet they want to micromanage what we are doing!! We are doing all we can! Working from home has been more difficult emotionally and physically than working in the school building.
