Adriana Jones This is what I wrote (separate comment) I’m a psychologist and I’m seeing first hand the emotional toll this is taking on students, parents, and teachers. I grew up in a household of educators so I understand that, too. I think more funding should be provided so it can be done as safely as possible. But them throwing up their hands and telling each district to figure it out themselves definitely isn’t the answer. There’s a lot of talk about white privilege. There also needs to be talk about educational and socioeconomic privilege. Especially as it relates to school this fall. If you have the means to homeschool or supervise your children in distance-learning, and you feel that is the best plan for your family, then do it!
If you have the means to do that but you feel the best option for your children is face-to-face learning, then support that! If you don’t want your child in a crowded public school but can move them to a smaller private school, do it.
But while you all fight over this, please take note that there are parents who are not equipped cognitively, emotionally, and/or financially to have their children at home while trying to learn.
Also, there are children who must have in-classroom learning. Without it, the achievement gap will continue to grow. The financial status of many families will decline. Emotional health will continue to deteriorate for students and parents. I think the best solution (not that anyone cares) is to have a virtual academy for anyone who wants or needs it and have seated classes for those who want or need it. We all benefit from an educated populous and children who have parents who aren’t stressed to the max each and every day. Same goes for teachers (who are also very often parent).
