So you think grocery store managers, purchasing agents, supply clerks and department supervisors are unskilled labor that doesn’t deserve a living wage to support a family. not for minimum wage low skill jobs. If you can’t learn a skill then you need to live with your parents for the rest of your life. The problem is there used to be factory jobs that people could get to support a family. The trades desperately need young people as a majority working in those fields are retiring. Don’t compare grocery clerks to skilled trades or even people doing hard physical labor. In our area, warehouse workers make good money. most of those businesses you are asking to pay more to their workers are in survival mode right now. Millions of small businesses will go out of business meaning tens of millions will be not employed long term including long after their unemployment benefits expire. If anyone stays in grocery, they often work their way up from the bottom. Like virtually all trades and professions. Not sure why this is a hill to die on. This is human nature and the reason any government handouts need to be short term. Most people would rather get free money and not work, I’d given a choice. It’s also the reason EDD asks you to lol for work and terminate your benefits if you turn down a job offer. (Of course, you have to be honest about the fact that your turned down work – which I suppose people are reluctant to do.) I am all for the government helping out more during this time… but be realistic… most people make half of that weekly so they are making well above their means while people who are at risk and having to go into work for less than these people.
I guess though if a company can prove that a person was offered a job and they decline it that they wont be able to collect.
