I am the same. I went to private and parochial school my whole life. I also want my kids to have a more well rounded education. They go to magnet schools in Raleigh. They have seen and heard it all. I remember when my high school freshman asked me about jail when he was in first grade saying somebody told him his brother was in jail. That was fun. I will say, though that now that he’s in high school, he’s gotten an appreciation for diversity. He’s also gotten together a group of friends he went to elementary school with and they are tutoring kids one day a week at the Boys and Girls Club at their old elementary school. My daughter is at that same elementary school and it’s why I am trying to get her into an all girls’ school. The boys are disrespectful, they are loud and bossy, and she needs to be in a more empowering atmosphere. I wished she’d had the same experience her brother did but it’s very different and that is sad. As home lives continue to become more tumultuous/traumatic and parents are rapidly decreasing the amount of time they spend with their children (technology is a cheap and ready babysitter), in conjunction with schools having limited disciplinary options, student behaviors are out of control and it’s only getting worse.
There is no band aid for it. I’m in the schools and I wish I knew what else to do as well. Keep showing up and keep talking to your kids. It’s a struggle. We also live in a rural area and see all kinds of things. One thing is for sure kids with good behavior and kids with bad behavior come from all kinds of backgrounds. Parental guidance and expectations seem to be what separates them.
