I do think these things are more related to environment and instruction, something our public schools are limited in. If you ever get an opportunity, go visit a KIPP school in Gaston or Halifax. You will be amazed at the focused and engaged learning going on and the whole culture of the school. Lashonda Haddock I never witnessed anything like that on my visits, though I will say, each child automatically shook hands, made eye contact and engaged comfortably in conversation after introducing themselves. The best mannered teens I have ever worked with. Lashonda Haddock well I will take my personal experience over an article. I’m still in touch with many of the students I worked with and they are thriving young adults, so something is working. I highly recommend reading Between the World and Me by Ta-Nehisi Coates, and maybe consider sharing it with your sons. Even more I recommend the audiobook/reading on kindle with the narration on. It feels even more impactful when you hear it spoken in Coates’s voice. This book has opened up a lot to me that I never would have known from my experiences as a privileged white woman.
“Between the World and Me is a letter to Ta-Nehisi Coates’s fifteen-year-old son, Samori. He weaves his personal, historical, and intellectual development into his ruminations on how to live in a black body in America.” Teachers have a right to teach & students have a right to learn. But when a child keeps a teacher from teaching & other students from learning then that student is removed from the class. This is the rule of thumb & needs to be enforced. Administrators have their hands full, but the responsibility lies w/ the right of a teacher to teach & the right of a student to learn. Keep this in mind when dealing w/ administrators & parents whose children constantly disrespect the system.
