Excuse me!!! Why would they never arrive? Thats like saying we will never forgive…wtf? Come on now people, some shit you need to push back on. This is a two way street of learning, otherwise what are we doing? does the post simply mean that we whyte people are never to be complacent in our anti-racism? That’s what I get from it, that my learning isn’t done just cuz I’m supposedly “woke”. That I can’t stop and say “oh I’m here now I’m an ally I’m done.” I agree; I grew up when public schools in my city were actually diverse (funding yellow buses? wat?) and my Master’s degree is deeply rooted in the literature of oppression. I read and involved myself in black feminism particularly. And yet my whiteness means that I am constantly immersed in privilege (also my economic circumstances). When you are immersed in privilege day in and day out, you cannot help but fall back into routine. You do have to constantly check yourself. That’s not a bad thing!

It will never be enough. There is absolutely nothing we (as white people) can do to completely ameliorate the harm done by 400+ of slavery and systemic racism. And that’s OKAY. It’s okay to do something and know that it will never be enough. It’s okay to work and work and work for something that gains you nothing. White people shouldn’t get cookies for not being racist. being an ally is not something we (white people) check off a list. It’s not a goal. It’s an ongoing pattern of action that will constantly need shaping and refining by continuing to listen to POC and showing up in ways that help to create long term change. There’s nothing to be offended about in being asked to keep learning and to not be complacent in our understanding. That should apply to all parts of life.
